Abstract:Uvod: Izmensko delo je v zdravstvenem sektorju nepogrešljivo.

Title:Shift work and ensuring patient safety
Abstract:Introduction: Shift work is indispensable in the health sector. Patients who need continuous acute care are also treated at night, which means that healthcare professionals work three- or two-shift shifts. Shift work and changes in biorhythms can lead to circadian rhythm disturbances, leading to fatigue, leading to errors. This thesis investigates how shift work influences the increased incidence of patient errors. Methods: In the final part, the descriptive method of work was used. A systematic review of the scientific and professional literature was conducted using international databases (Medline, CINAHL, PubMed, Cochrane Library, IOS Press). We have considered the inclusion and exclusion criteria and included articles published between 2011 and 2021. Results: Shift work has been found to contribute to circadian rhythm disturbances in individuals. As a result, the person suffers from sleep deprivation, leading to cognitive impairment. This leads to an increased frequency of errors in the patient care process and compromises patient safety. Discussion and conclusion: As shift and night work in healthcare is unavoidable, health education of employees about the risk of fatigue-related errors is important. We also need to promote a culture of safety in the workplace.
