Title:Stress, coping mechanisms, role conflict and sources of social support with student mothers and working mothers
Abstract:In Slovenia, the number of students who are mothers increased by almost 3 % between 2015 and 2018 (Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, 2015; Evroštudent, 2018), and Slovenia ranks among the top three EU Member States in terms of maternal employment (Eurostat, 2019). As balancing the demands of different roles can be stressful, our paper sought to investigate whether there are differences in perceived stress levels between student mothers and working mothers, and how different coping strategies, role conflicts between study/work and family, perceived social support, and systemic support are related to perceived stress levels in the aforementioned groups. We were also interested in whether there is a difference between knowledge and use of existing forms of systemic support, and how the latter is related to the level of perceived stress. 922 women participated in the study, of whom 819 (88.70%) were working mothers, 74 (6.80%) were student mothers and 41 (2.10%) were working mothers with student status, who were not included in the study due to low participation. In addition to demographic questions, participants completed the Perceived Stress Scale - PSS, the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS-21) questionnaire, the Work-Family Conflict Questionnaire - WFCS, the Work-Study-Family Conflict Questionnaire - MWFSC and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Both groups reported medium levels of stress, and there were no differences in knowledge and use of forms of systemic support. The use of problem-focused strategies predicted lower levels of stress, and the use of social support resources, perceived conflict between study/work and family was associated with perceived higher levels of stress. There was no association between the use of systemic support and perceived stress.
