Title:Impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on trends in human trafficking
Abstract:While classical slavery known from history was abolished and banned in the first half of the 20th century, slavery in new forms has been developing further. Human trafficking is recognized as a global problem where human traffickers exploit the vulnerability of individuals. The outbreak of the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has affected the daily life of individuals. These have become even more vulnerable and susceptible to exploitation. Due to the need to curb the covid-19 pandemic, countries and anti-trafficking institutions, have been forced to change their priorities. It makes sense to conclude about the changes that may have occurred in human trafficking. With minor adjustments, trafficking trends continue from the years before the outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The number of victims of human trafficking is still increasing. The predominant gender of trafficking victims is the female gender, while the predominant gender of the suspects is male. The predominant form of trafficking before and during covid-19 pandemic is the sexual exploitation of victims, followed by exploitation for forced labor. There has been an increase in the recruitment and exploitation of victims online. Child exploitation has increased, mainly in the form of distribution and viewing of online material on child sexual exploitation. With some initial difficulties, both the perpetrators and the institutions working to combat human trafficking have successfully adapted to the covid-19 pandemic.
