Title:Association of infant regulatory problems with structural changes of the insula and avoidant personality traits in adulthood
Abstract:Early regulatory problems (RP) (e.g., problems with crying, sleeping and/or feeding) increase susceptibility for emotional, behavioural and social problems in adulthood, especially for avoidant personality traits and problems in establishing and maintaining personal relationships. Maternal sensitivity could lower the effect of negative problems in RP group. Neurobiological changes in RP group were found in two brain networks, which form the allostatic-interoceptive network. In that network, insula integrates afferent sensory information for regulation of energy and maintaining homeostasis in the body and is key to the success of those processes. Our goal was to check how RP affect structure of the insula, how it relates to avoidant personality traits in adulthood and how maternal sensitivity moderates the effect of early RPs. We used a dataset from »Bavarian longitudinal study« and selected individuals with history of RPs (N = 47) and control group without RPs (N = 121). Individuals in the sample had their brain scanned with MRI, completed a self-report personality assessment in adulthood and maternal sensitivity assessment at 6 and 8 years of age. Results show (1) higher gyrification bilaterally and lower cortical thickness of the left insula in RP group, (2) that this effect was strongest for persistent RPs and (3) that the changes in the gyrification of left insula were significantly correlated with avoidant personality traits. Our results significantly contribute to the understanding of the effect of RP on human neurodevelopment and functioning in adulthood. It may contribute to development and implementation of preventive strategies for negative effects of RPs on human development.
