Title:The War to Defend an Independent Slovenia (1991) in the Light of French Newspaper Reports
Abstract:This Master's Thesis examines the coverage by French newspapers of the war to defend an independent Slovenia, which took place between 26/27 June and 7 July 1991. For this purpose, the most important daily newspapers, Le Monde and Le Figaro, were analysed, while also taking into account the most relevant literature. Slovenia's independence, declared on 25 June 1991, encountered heavy resistance from the Yugoslav authorities and their armed forces, the Yugoslav People's Army, who adamantly opposed the secession and wished to prevent further dissolution. Initially, Slovenia was forced to rely only on its own armed forces and civil population, but soon the European Economic Community, with France as one of their key nations, intervened with diplomatic action. The reporting of the analysed French dailies was most often chronological; correspondents mostly followed and reported on the decisions of political elites of Slovenia and Yugoslavia and on the intervention of the European 12, occasionally supplementing them with critical analysis. Of the views of the French political leadership, two contradictory aspirations could be derived from the reports of the two most representative French dailies: to preserve a united Yugoslavia, while respecting the principle of self-determination of the nation. The persistent desire for French protection of Yugoslavia's territorial integrity was driven by the traditional Franco-Serbian connection, the fear of escalation of ethnic conflicts in the Balkans and, consequently, the re-emergence of Germany and past rivalries alongside possible discord in the European Economic Community. The shift in the mindset of European countries and the United States was eventually prompted by the aggression of the Yugoslav People's Army. The determination of the Slovenes, the military perseverance of the Slovene defence forces (territorial defence, militia), the diplomatic connections of Slovenian politicians led to the 7 July signing of the Brioni Agreement, confirming the cessation of hostilities and binding of Slovenia to a three-month »hold« of its independence.
