Title:The role of diplomacy in the Vietnam war
Abstract:Diplomacy is used to reach foreign policy goals of a nation whilst fostering its security, independence, and integrity. North and South Vietnam, to reach their goals, used diplomacy in the form of alliances and bilateral agreements. The Vietnam war was an important event, that shaped the course of the second half of the 20th century, as it affected the strategic interest of the People’s Republic of China, the USA, and the Soviet Union, as well as diplomatic relations between them. During the war, the two sides created alliances through bilateral agreements and international organizations. South Vietnam was part of SEATO, an international organization, that was created in the name of collective security against the spread of communism in south-east Asia. North Vietnam created its alliances through bilateral agreements and “brotherly” solidarity between communist states. Communism was the main reason for the ever-increasing American presence in Vietnam as they viewed it as a threat to American interests and stability in the region. America’s biggest opponents, the Soviet Union and China, both communist countries, where allies of Northern Vietnam, which mirrored the wider rivalry of capitalism and communism during the Cold war. The United States of America entered the war to prevent South Vietnam from falling into communist hands. At first, the USA operated from the background, but by 1964, they sent combat units and became much more directly involved and South Vietnam’s primary supplier and supporter.
