Abstract:Zaradi pomanjkanja surovin, težav pri dobavi električne energije, geopolitičnih tveganj in volatilnosti cen, se vse bolj kažejo potrebe po drugačnem pristopu do proizvodnje in potrošnje dobrin.

Title:Material flow analysis of aluminium in Slovenia and its role for circular economy
Abstract:Due to the lack of raw materials, problems in the supply of electricity, geopolitical risks and price volatility, the need for a different approach to the production and consumption of goods is becoming increasingly evident. In the Master's thesis, we thus ensure the sustainable management of resources, both renewable and non-renewable, as well as the management of critical raw materials. According to experts, low-carbon technologies, the global digitization of business and the transition to a green economy will require even more resources, especially some metal materials. The stock of non-renewable resources, which includes ores, is finite and if we want to preserve them for future generations, they must be managed sustainably. Resource scarcity means missed business opportunities, especially when critical raw materials are involved. In 2020, the mineral bauxite, from which primary aluminum is obtained, was also recognized as a critical raw material. In the master's thesis, we analyzed material flows of aluminum in Slovenia and collected data on available materials for recycling or further transformation. We find that aluminum recycling is more competitive than primary production, as the amount of raw material and energy resources is consumed by increasing the proportion of recycled aluminum used, and in this way, the emissions to the air are also lower. It would also make sense to focus on the extraction of aluminum from secondary sources due to the rise in the prices of energy products and the tough conditions on the market due to the war in Ukraine, as both have an additional effect on the promotion of primary production and its import. Aluminum does not lose its properties through recycling, so it can be recycled indefinitely, which is also reflected in cost savings. Since it returns directly to the economy through recycling, its import dependence is also taken into account. We believe that there is an economically acceptable potential for production of aluminum from secondary sources in Slovenia, as consumption is higher than production, and the import of aluminum and aluminum products is also increasing from year to year.
