Title:Emotions in everyday life: The role of emotion differentiation in emotion regulation : magistrsko delo
Abstract:Emotion differentiation is beneficial and is associated with many positive outcomes as it serves as an ability that promotes psychological and social well-being. The ability to differentiate between emotions also provides information that could lead to more effective emotion regulation. Thus, this master's thesis examines how emotion differentiation is correlated to the choice of emotion regulation strategies and the effectiveness of their use, and what role the intensity of emotions plays in emotion regulation. For the research, the experience sampling method in which participants reported their emotions six times a day for seven days was used. Based on a sample of 205 participants aged between 19 and 35, it was found that there is a statistically significant negative association between the differentiation of negative emotions and all emotion regulation strategies, and that the differentiation of negative emotions has a statistically significant moderating role in the relationship between social sharing and negative affect. It was also shown that the strategies as expressive suppression, distraction and rumination mediate the relation between the differentiation of negative emotions and negative affect, and that the intensity of emotions has a statistically significant moderating role in the relationship between acceptance and negative affect, and in the relationship between social sharing and negative affect. Despite some contradictory findings from past research, we believe that the effectiveness of the strategies used still depends on the context and that emotion differentiation is essential for favourable emotion regulation. Undoubtedly, more research is needed to further understand the mechanisms through which emotion differentiation exerts its beneficial effects. However, we hope that the knowledge gained through this research will have important practical implications and that it represents at least a small step forward towards informing and improving the therapeutic treatment of various affective disorders.
