Abstract:Domačo mačko (Felis catus) danes najdemo na obljudenih območjih vseh celin, razen na Antarktiki.

Title:Chronobiology of Domestic Cats (Felis catus): Activity of Free-Roaming Individuals in Relation to Daily, Nightly, Lunar and Seasonal Rhythms
Abstract:The domestic cat (Felis catus) is now found in populated areas on every continent except Antarctica. They probably have the highest proportion of free-roaming (feral) individuals in the domestic cat population compared to other domestic animals and are therefore an important component of the ecosystem. Fort this reason, domestic cats are highly stigmatised. A strong initiative has been formed for total control of cats, i. e. for captive life exclisively, which is problematic from an animal welfare point of view. However, studies on cat activity in relation to natural cycles (day-night, lunar, season) are scarce. The aim of our research was to study their day-night, lunar and seasonal rhythms. Data collection was based on video analysis over a period of one year in a selected corridor (a patch of scrub in an agricultural landscape). The highest activity of domestic cats was recorded at night and in the early morning hours. In terms of seasonal changes, cats were most frequently observed in summer and spring. When studying the lunar cycle, we found that it has no effect on wild domestic cats per se, but their activity is seasonally linked to lunar cycles. The importance of the research was to achieve a higher level of understanding of domestic cats and their activities, which can also help us to understand their impact on wild fauna. Understanding the day-night, lunar and seasonal rhythms of domestic cats, can help us to design optimal strategies to ensure their well-being and minimise their impact on wild fauna.
