Title:Analysis of the Impact of a Static Synchronous Series Compensator on the Operation of Transmission Line Protection using a Hardware-In-the-Loop configuration
Abstract:On the international transmission line connecting substations Podlog and Obersielach, ELES (Slovenian transmission system operator) observed an increasing trend of overload. One of the modern solutions is an installation of a Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) in the Podlog substation, which can decrease power flow on the discussed line. SSSC indirectly, i.e. through injected line voltages, impacts the line’s reactance, and therefore it can cause incorrect operation of the implemented line distance protection relays. In the master thesis, we analyzed the impact of the SSSC on the performance of line distance protection at different short circuit capabilities of the nearby grid and fault parameters. We have also analyzed the impact of the SSSC on the performance of the combined line distance-differential protection, which is not used on international transmission lines. For the analysis, we used a Hardware-in-the-Loop configuration with the real-time digital simulator NovaCor connected with two communication-assisted protection relays Siemens 7SD5. Results show that the SSSC impacted line distance protection operation in only 1 % of cases (for some high-resistance faults), while it did not impact the operation of the line differential protection in any way.
