Abstract:Magistrsko delo obravnava temo kuge v izbranih literarnih delih slovenskih pisateljev, ki so nastala od druge polovice 19. do konca tridesetih let 20. stoletja. Ta dela so razvrščena po kronološkem načelu: France Štrukelj, Kranjska nevesta (1864); Vladimir Levstik, Historija o kugi (1907); Fran Ksaver Meško, Črna smrt (1911); Alojzij Remec, Anno domini (1911); Ivan Pregelj, Plebanus Joanes (1920); Januš Golec, Zlato in kuga pod križem (1934).

Title:The topic of plague in slovene storytelling from realism to social realism
Abstract:Master's thesis explores the theme of plague in selected literary works of Slovene writers from second half of 19th century to the end of 1930s. The theoretical part encompasses the presentation of the relevant literary-theoretical concepts and the presentation of the plague from the contemporary medicine’s point of view and historical chronicle of plague outbreaks on the area of today’s Slovenia. The analytical part envelops the analysis of five selected literary works containing the theme of plague. The selected works are France Štrukelj, Kranjska nevesta (1864); Vladimir Levstik, Historija o kugi (1907); Fran Ksaver Meško, Črna smrt (1911); Alojzij Remec, Anno domini (1911); Ivan Pregelj, Plebanus Joanes (1920) ter Januš Golec, Zlato in kuga pod križem (1934). The analysis is focused on the presentation of the plague in those literary works, especially concerning the symptoms, relationship of the characters towards the plague and their survival, the influence of the plague on the events of the stories and symbolic and metaphorical meanings of the plague. Plague was originally a disease carried by fleas on rodents, but it soon spread on people. Its ability to quickly transfer between people caused mass outbreaks which resulted in massive epidemics. In turn people developed different procedures to combat the plague, which were mostly fruitless. Because plague could not be explained, in time the idea about the plague being a God’s punishment was born. Some relics of this thinking is still visible today, mainly in architecture achievements of the past, for example various churches, dedicated to the various saints to combat the disease. Even though the last great plague epidemic hit the area of today’s Slovenia around 300 years ago, the society could not stop fearing of the next outbreak for a long time. This fear took hold and spread through many generations of people. This is strongly reflected in literary works, even in relatively recent works, presented in this master’s thesis. The theme of plague is often reflected in the era of the story, in various diseased characters, precautions, descriptions, which can be different, but with the same symptoms (high body temperature, nausea, confusion, tremor and losing consciousness). There is a significant difference in description of mortality of the disease. In some cases, the plague is described as a terminal disease (e.g. Anno Domini, Zlato in kuga pod križem) and in others, as a dangerous disease but not necessarily terminal. In four of the selected works, the plague is presented as a curable disease. At the same time, in all of the works, excluding Kranjska nevesta, there is a significant metaphoric language. Some of the metaphors are similar and appear in multiple works (plague as a killer, the Black Death, Death). Plabanus Joannes is distinctive in a sense that the metaphoric language is quite specific, as is the symbolism of the plague, which is more connected to the expressionist idea of the end of the world and the rebirth than to the classical idea of the plague being a punishment for the sins of humanity.
