Title:The impact of the financial crisis in 2008 on the quality of life in the countries of the European Union
Abstract:In the master's thesis, we focused in more detail on researching the effects of the financial crisis in 2008 on the quality of life in certain European Union countries. Countries were systematically divided into those with lower GDP per capita and those with higher GDP per capita, and eight countries were included in each group. We started from long-term measurable indicators of quality of life, namely five key categories: health, education, material living conditions, personal security and the natural and living environment. For each category separately, we checked whether it was confirmed that the financial crisis had a statistically significant impact on the selected indicator. We additionally tested whether the financial crisis had a more substantial negative impact on each indicator in the studied countries with lower GDP per capita than in the studied countries with higher GDP per capita. Based on theoretical starting points on the concept of the financial crisis, we realized that financial crises could have a significant impact on the quality of life, especially in developing economies. When studying the impact of the financial crisis on the health indicator, we found a negative correlation with real economic growth in both groups of countries. We reach similar conclusions with the education indicator, the share of young people between 15 and 34 who are unemployed and at the same time not involved in any formal or informal education or training, where also in the period after the financial crisis in 2008, its deterioration was detected for both groups of countries. In examining the correlation between real economic growth and the quality of life indicator for the category of material living conditions, we again conclude that the financial crisis in 2008 had a statistically significant and negative impact on the share of the population living in a leaky roof, floors or foundations and/or in the decomposition of window frames or floors. However, when determining the impact of the financial crisis on the indicator of personal security, crime rates, violence and vandalism for households below 60% of the median personal income in the country, it is not possible to determine its deterioration. The only country where the personal security indicator has changed for the worse since the crisis is Greece. Examining the impact of the financial crisis in 2008 on the indicator of the natural and living environment, greenhouse gas emissions, a statistically significant change was detected in the post-crisis period compared to the pre-crisis period, namely in countries with lower GDP per capita.
