Abstract:Bela štorklja Ciconia ciconia velja za modelno vrsto raziskovanja selitve ptic.

Title:Migration patterns of juvenile White Storks Ciconia ciconia from Slovenia
Abstract:The White Stork Ciconia ciconia is considered as a model species for the research of bird migration. Bird migrations are repeated movements between the nesting and wintering sites at approximately the same time in spring and autumn. There are differences between migration patterns of juvenile and adult specimens of the White Stork, as juvenile specimens do not yet have established migration routes. The understanding of migratory patterns of juvenile White Storks is still considerably unexplored. However, it is known that their mortality during migration is higher than the mortality of adults, which may affect the size of the entire population. For the first time in Slovenia, we conducted a survey of migration patterns of juvenile White Storks. We equipped ten juvenile White Storks with GPS/GSM transmitters on their nests in the Dolenjsko podolje, Krška ravan and Ljubljansko barje. With the obtained data, we described the first migration of juvenile White Storks from Slovenia, determined and calculated the basic migration parameters, described the wintering sites of juvenile White Storks and determined the mortality of juvenile White Storks during their first migration and wintering in Africa. Most of the studied individuals chose the so-called Eastern migration route for their first migration, which is considered the main migration route of the eastern population of White Storks. The White Storks wintered mainly in the Sub-Saharan Africa, which is considered as an important wintering site for both eastern and western populations of White Storks. All cases of the death of White Storks, for which we found the cause, were caused by humans, through direct or indirect actions, which influenced the individuals of White Storks.
