Abstract:V nalogi smo v teoretičnem delu predstavili teoretične novosti o storitvah, razvoj in pomen mednarodne trgovine s storitvami (v primerjavi z izdelki), proučili lastnosti in značilnosti storitev in mednarodne trgovine z njimi, zaradi katerih se razlikujejo od lastnosti in značilnosti dejavnosti izdelkov (dobrin, proizvodov, produktov).

Title:Connectivity between export and innovation intensity in the business services sector in Slovenia
Abstract:In the thesis, in theoretical part, we have presented the theoretical innovations on services, the development and importance of international trade in services (compared to international trade in products), examined the characteristics and features of services and international trade in them that make them different from the characteristics and features of the producing of products (goods). In the context of rapid development of international trade in services, we have examined the characteristics and features of innovation activities in services (service activities) and what distinguishes them from innovation activities in manufacturing activities. Based on various sources and our own research, we have compiled a list of 13 characteristics and features of services, which are brought together for the first time in one place in this PhD thesis. These characteristics precisely define services and (international) trade in services, which distinguishes them from the characteristics of products and (international) trade in them. In relation to services, we have examined the elements mobility of capital, mobility of labor (people), transnational enterprises, use and development of new technologies, cross-border information flows (digitalization and protection of intellectual property) that affect international trade in services and the barriers to this trade. We have provided some basic statistic data on the importance of services and service activities in international trade. We have examined innovation and innovation activities in services. In doing so, we have structurally limited our analytical work to business services as a narrower part of the non-financial service activities and geographically to the territory of Slovenia. In the core part of the dissertation, we developed a research model based on the use of analytical methods applied by researchers in the field of manufacturing activities and applied them to the field of business services. In order to identify the economic effects of export activities in terms of the impact of innovation activities and investment activities in development in the business services sector in Slovenia, it was necessary to build a two-step model. Because of that we presented the classical growth model and the development of the endogenous growth model, which was the basis for the construction of our model. First, we used a simple "probit" model to determine the impact of export activities on the economy conditional on innovation activities (for selected periods 2002-2008 and 2010-2016) and the impact of export activities on the economy conditional on investment activities (for selected period 2010-2016). In a second step, we generalized the model and used innovation (investment) activities as endogenous variables using a simultaneous probit model. The results show that innovation activities in business services firms are important for success in foreign markets. Firms with new or improved services competed better in foreign markets than non-innovative service firms. Between 2010 and 2016, the results showed that almost one in two innovation-intensive firms were also likely to become export-intensive. However, due to the high estimation risk of the model, it was not possible to confirm the inverse effect that export activities have a positive impact on innovation activities. The measurement results confirmed the hypothesis that investment activities in R&D had a positive impact on higher export activities in firms for the measured period 2010–2016. The more firms invested in development, the more likely they were to be exporters. For the measurement period between 2010 and 2016, the calculations showed the likelihood of a positive impact of exports on investment intensity. Firms that were exporters invested more in investment activities than those that exported nothing.
