Title:Attitude of certain Slovene age groups towards surrogacy
Abstract:The development of new reproductive technologies (NRT) brought forward the need to re-conceptualise or redefine parenthood. One of NRTs is also surragacy, which gives couples around the globe the possibility to create the basic social cell – a family. The aim of this master thesis is to find out what the attitude of some Slovene age groups is towards surrogacy and reproductive tourism. So far, there has been no notable research done in this field in Slovenia. The theoretical part of the thesis includes the conceptualisation of parenthood with emphasis on its new forms. The focus of the analysis is on the profile of surrogate mothers and what are the motives on both sides of the surrogacy contract leading to such »business«. The concept of surragacy is presented from various aspects – psychological, social, religious, legal and ethical. To investigate the attitude of Slovenes towards surrogacy the quantitative method of online surveys has been used (N = 563). The survey follows the German and Polish survey patterns. The results show that the concept of surrogacy is known to most of the respondents in the research and that knowing the concept depends on the level of gained education. The Slovenes would mostly support the legalisation of surrogacy in Slovenia. The respondents are more in favour of gestational than traditional surrogacy; the men find commercial surrogacy more acceptable, while the women support the non-commercial, altruistic form of it. It has been found that there is a statistically characteristic connection between the acceptability of reproductive tourism and age. The highest percentage of respondents in all age groups think that reproductive tourism is acceptable. According to the results of the research it can be concluded that, through recognising the legal, ethical, social, religious and psychological limitations, this share could decrease.
