Title:The challenges of running a family business
Abstract:The thesis is divided into a theoretical and an empirical part. Throughout the theoretical part, we have found that there is still no consensus among authors on the definition of a family business. We have examined the different definitions of the family business, focusing in particular on the challenges that affect the management of the family business. Conflicts are considered by many authors to be a major obstacle to doing business and are thus the most common reason for the failure of family-owned SMEs. In the theoretical part of the thesis, we have focused on the different definitions of the family business, the conflicts that arise within the business and the different methods of resolving them, with the help of the findings of experts and authors. We have found that the relationships within a family business are very complex, as the family and business systems are intertwined within these relationships. We have examined the link between the family and the business, and the impact of both systems on the emergence of inevitable conflict situations. We have further analysed the possible relationships within the family business and the conflicts that arise from them. In the next chapter we looked at possible ways of dealing with conflicts and how to resolve them successfully. In the last chapter we touched upon the issue of succession, which often leads to rifts within the family. We have looked at the succession process, succession options and the obstacles most often encountered by a family business in the process of handing over the business to the next generation. The empirical part of the thesis includes a case study of the family business Sporti, d. o. o. Through interviews we investigated the management challenges faced by the selected company, the relationship between the founder and the sons of the successors and the relationship between the siblings who are currently running the company. We found that open communication and timely succession planning are important factors for successful business management. In this context, one of the biggest challenges is the consistent coordination and goal setting between the owners. Finally, we found that the owners of Sporti d.o.o. are aware of the importance of timely planning for the transfer of knowledge to the next, already third generation, which is important for the successful implementation of the succession and for a continuous and stable business within the family circle.
