Title:The prevalence of the most common food allergies in dogs in Slovenia
Abstract:Allergy is an excessive reaction of immune system to a specific allergen. Food allergies in dogs are increasing in recent decades and cause various dermatological and gastrointestinal disorders. The purpose of the master's thesis was to assess the incidence and most common cause of food allergies in Slovenia. At the same time, we also recorded the dietary habits of the dogs. The data were obtained by a survey questionnaire filled out by 324 dog owners. The gender ratio of dogs was fairly balanced (53 % females), with the predominance of purebred dogs (60%) living in a house with their owner (68 %). We found that the majority of owners feed their dogs with commercially prepared dry food (41 %), which is most often purchased in pet stores (45 %). According to the results, food allergies occur in 39 % of dogs, with the most common allergen being poultry meat (15 %). In 50 % of cases, food allergies appear already in the first year of a dog's life and are most often manifested as itching (19 %). Dog owners most often diagnose food allergies using an elimination diet (46 %). The obtained results of the research can help to raise awareness among dog owners about the importance of proper nutrition and maintenance of a strong immune system for the well-being of dogs, as well as inform veterinarians about the incidence of food allergies in Slovenia.
