Title:	Izzivi večjezične komunikacije na Urgentnem centru Univerzitetnega kliničnega centra Maribor : magistrsko delo

Abstract:	Družbeno angažirano prevodoslovje, tolmačenje za potrebe skupnosti in večjezična komunikacija v zadnjem obdobju pridobivajo pomen, saj so globalizacijski in migracijski tokovi tudi v Sloveniji prispevali k spremembam v strukturi prebivalstva. V magistrskem delu obravnavamo tuje državljane, ki ne govorijo in ne razumejo slovenskega jezika, vendar potrebujejo zdravstveno oskrbo ali nujno medicinsko pomoč. Gre za ranljive skupine državljanov, ki zaradi pomanjkljivega znanja jezika potrebujejo pomoč pri sporazumevanju z državnimi organi, uradi in javnimi ustanovami. V ospredje razprave postavljamo človekove pravice do sporazumevanja, opredeljene v evropskih direktivah, s katerimi tudi v zdravstvu urejamo in zagotavljamo pravico do pomoči pri sporazumevanju, za kar potrebujemo strokovno izobražene tolmače ter prevajalce. V pričujočem magistrskem delu analiziramo komunikacijske izzive med zdravstvenimi delavci in tujejezičnimi pacienti na Urgentnem centru UKC Maribor. Zanimalo nas je, s katerimi sporazumevalnimi težavami se pri obravnavi tujejezičnih pacientov srečujejo zdravstveni delavci na Urgentnem centru UKC Maribor in kako rešujejo morebitne komunikacijske izzive. V teoretičnem delu smo opredelili večjezično sporazumevanje v zdravstvu in osvetlili pomen kulturnega ozadja pri sporazumevanju med zdravnikom ter pacientom. Pri tem smo se oprli na teorijo skoposa, ki v ospredje prevodoslovne teorije postavlja pomen in vlogo prevajalca ali tolmača kot medkulturnega posrednika ter izvedenca za določeno področje. V luči družbeno angažiranega prevodoslovja smo predstavili pomen tolmačenja za potrebe skupnosti in orisali veljavno zakonodajo na področju zdravstva ter tujejezičnih pacientov tako v Sloveniji kot na ravni Evropske unije. V razpravo smo vključili tudi osnovne značilnosti strokovnega jezika in prevajanja medicinske terminologije. V empiričnem delu smo pripravili anketne vprašalnike za štiri ciljne skupine na UKC Maribor: medicinsko osebje Urgentnega centra; reševalce Nujne medicinske pomoči Zdravstvenega doma dr. Adolfa Drolca Maribor; tujejezične paciente in zaposlene v prevajalski službi UKC Maribor. Z anketo smo preverili, katere jezike obvladajo zaposleni na Urgentnem centru UKC Maribor in reševalci Nujne medicinske pomoči Zdravstvenega doma dr. Adolfa Drolca Maribor; kolikšen je delež tujejezičnih pacientov na Urgentnem centru UKC Maribor, ali so pri sporazumevanju s tujimi pacienti prisotni tolmači in ali so izvidi, ki jih tujejezični pacienti prejmejo po obravnavi, prevedeni. Na osnovi odgovorov, pridobljenih z anketami in intervjuji, smo ugotovili, koliko so zaposleni na Urgentnem centru UKC Maribor pripravljeni na izzive večjezične komunikacije pri obravnavi tujih državljanov, in podali predloge možnih izboljšav.

Title:	Challenges of Multilingual Communication in the Emergency Room of the Maribor University Medical Centre
Abstract:	Socially engaged translation, community interpreting and multilingual communication have an increasingly important role, as globalization and migration flows changed the population structure in Slovenia. In the thesis, we focus on foreign citizens who do not speak or understand the Slovene language and need medical care or emergency medical services. These are vulnerable groups of citizens who need assistance in communicating with state bodies, offices and public institutions. The thesis focuses on the human right to communicate, as defined in the European Directives, which also regulate and guarantee the right to communication assistance in the health sector. For this purpose we need professionally trained interpreters and translators. In the thesis, we analyze communication challenges which occur between healthcare professionals and foreign-language patients at the Emergency Room of the Maribor University Medical Centre. We were interested in challenges in communication faced by healthcare professionals at the Emergency Room of the Maribor University Medical Centre when treating foreign patients and how they solve such communication challenges. In the theoretical part, we defined multilingual communication in healthcare and highlighted the importance of cultural background in a doctor-patient communication. Theoretical part is based on the theory of skopos, which emphasizes the importance and role of the translator or interpreter as an intercultural mediator and an expert in a certain field. Following socially engaged translation studies, we presented the importance of community interpreting and outlined the importance of the existing legislation in the field of healthcare and foreign patients in Slovenia and in other countries of the European Union. We also focused on primary characteristics of the professional language and translation of medical terminology. The empirical research focused on the following target groups, which were interviewed with anonymous questionnaires developed specifically for each group: medical staff, including doctors and nurses at the Emergency Room of the Maribor University Medical Centre, ambulance paramedics at the dr. Adolfa Drolca Maribor Health Care Centre, foreign language patients, and employees of the Maribor University Medical Centre translation service. The aim of the survey was to discover which languages the staff of the Emergency Room of the Maribor University Medical Centre and the ambulance paramedics of the dr. Adolfa Drolca Maribor Health Centre speak, how many foreign language patients are treated at the Emergency Room of the Maribor University Medical Centre, whether interpreters are present when communicating with foreign patients, and whether medical reports which foreign language patients receive at the end of their treatment are translated. Based on the data collected in the surveys and interviews, we identified how well the staff at the Emergency Room of the Maribor University Medical Centre is prepared for the challenges of multilingual communication in the treatment of foreign patients and offered suggestions for possible improvements.
