Abstract:Ogroženost okolja in globalne podnebne spremembe so med največjimi izzivi sodobnega časa. Človeške dejavnosti, kot so izgorevanje fosilnih goriv, krčenje gozdov in intenzivno kmetijstvo, povzročajo povečanje toplogrednih plinov v ozračju, ki zadržujejo toploto in spreminjajo naravno ravnovesje. Posledice so vidne v porastu povprečne temperature zraka in oceanov, taljenju ledenikov in polarnega ledu, dvigu morske gladine, pogostejših in ekstremnejših vremenskih dogodkih ter izgubi biotske raznovrstnosti.

Title:Comparative life cycle assessment of aerogels and conventional insulation materials
Abstract:Environmental threats and global climate change are among the greatest challenges of modern times. Human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and intensive agriculture cause an increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which retain heat and alter the natural balance. The consequences are visible in the rise of the average air temperature in the oceans, the melting of glaciers and polar ice, the rise of sea levels, more frequent and extreme weather events, and biodiversity loss. Urgent action is needed at all levels, from local to global, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to changed conditions and preserve natural resources for future generations. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a methodology for assessing the environmental impacts associated with all phases of the life cycle of a product, process, or service. In this study, LCA is utilized to compare the production processes of five different insulation materials in the construction industry: starch airgel, silicate airgel, stone wool, glass wool and polyurethane foam. The goal of the analysis is to determine which material has the lowest environmental footprint in terms of various impact categories. Based on the results, we can conclude that starch and silica aerogel are a more sustainable option for insulation materials in the construction industry than stone wool, glass wool or polyurethane foam. However, other factors such as cost, availability, performance, and durability of materials must also be considered in specific applications.
