V številčni premoči so dejansko bili šiiti, čeprav so bili suniti tisti, ki so bili privilegirani in vladali v Iraku vse do Sadamovega padca.

Title:Iraq under Saddam Hussein
Abstract:The Republic of Iraq, as we know it today, was formed by the West led by the United Kingdom in the 1920s. Throughout the history of the newly formed country and an artificial formation at the same time, numerous autocratic regimes, which saw many ups and downs, followed one after another. The peak of these regimes is the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein, which had a strong impact on the history and development of Iraq since 1979. This master's thesis puts the period of the second reign of the Ba'ath regime in Iraq into focus, more precisely the political regime of Saddam Hussein, which was based on full and complete obedience, patronage or rewarding and ruthless terror towards the opponents of this regime. Saddam's fatal political decisions, which are most visible in territorial and economic tendencies, as were the Iran-Iraq war and the Gulf war, are put into focus. Far-reaching consequences of his decisions were, in the end, most devastating for the Iraqi people, who were dying due to humanitarian crisis. Such uncompromising regime, which was (mostly loyally) followed by the Sunni elite, Ba'ath party and security architecture of the country, enabled Saddam to rule Iraq longer than anyone else before him. The country had been a real mixture of religious and ethnic groups since its beginnings. The Shia Muslims were in numeric supremacy, although the Sunni Muslims were the ones, who were privileged and ruled in Iraq until Saddam’s downfall. The most frequent and most bloody fights were with the Shiʿah in the south and the Kurds in the north. The key role in Iraq's history was also played by the West. Iraq had full support of the West in the Iran-Iraq war, but the story was completely different when Iraq invaded Kuwait. After this invasion the USA and the United Kingdom led a more aggressive politics to Iraq. The attack on Iraq followed in 2003, to which most of the world opposed. To have a more realistic presentation of international and specifically American public opinion, the American newspaper The New York Times is also included; it reported on Iraq from the political and military aspect, although less critically in the beginning. After Saddam's capture, trial and execution a battle for power started in Iraq, from which the Shiʿah triumphed and they are still reigning nowadays in an insecure, unstable, but a freer country.
