Title:Medieval icons of Mary in the Dominican monastery in Ptuj
Abstract:The master's thesis entitled Medieval icons of Mary in the Dominican Monastery in Ptuj covers a brief overview of the events that took place from the foundation of the monastery in 1230 until the dissolution in the 18th century, the development of the Dominican order and its ideology, the outline of the monument complex of the Dominican monastery in Ptuj, a detailed review of medieval paintings around the premises, historical outline, the development of Marian iconography and a detailed stylistic and content review of Marian motifs in the monastery complex. Mary plays as important role in Christian art as her son. The development of Slovenian Marian fine art began mainly with the Dominicans. The Dominican monastery in Ptuj is considered one of the first three Dominican monasteries in Slovenia with which the first Slovenian Marian depictions are associated. The Dominican monastery in Ptuj is a central monument not only in Ptuj but also in Slovenia. For 555 years the monastery represented the spiritual, artistic and educational centre of the city of Ptuj. With its rich architectural design and the remains of paintings created in the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods it still draws attention of its extensive history.
