Title:Comparison of the understanding of pictorial and video instructions in practical lessons of natural sciences and technology in class 4
Abstract:In the era of digital technology we depend more and more on multimedia tools, which are increasingly implemented in educational institutions as well. The objective of our research is to study the impact of the sort of instructions provided – either classical pictorial instructions or video recordings – on the process of manufacture and the pupil's final product in the practical lessons within the subject Natural Sciences and Technology in Grade 4 of the primary school. Our goal is to find out which type of instructions (pictorial or video) is better understood and liked by the pupils. This Master's thesis includes an overview of the Natural Sciences and Technology curriculum, an analysis of various methods, forms of work, approaches to teaching practical skills and understanding the term multimedia. The empirical part was carried out by means of a pilot model in four classes of Grade 4 in a Slovenian primary school. We planned 4 practical lessons for each individual class (two lessons for each specific type of instructions). The focus of the lessons was on individual work with the help of two different types of instructions (enclosed pictorial and video instructions). Video instructions were created exclusively for the purpose of this research (we have prepared them on the basis of the guidelines for quality drafting of multimedia instructions). Based on the research performed we have reached the key findings that the pupils have found video instructions more illustrative, as these included several different kinds of stimuli simultaneously (picture, text, video, sound).
