Abstract:Mednarodne raziskave (TIMSS, PISA) so pokazale, da slovenski učenci na področju naravoslovja izkazujejo nadpovprečne rezultate, a imajo izrazito nizko motivacijo za učenje naravoslovja. Povprečno so pravilno načrtovali več poskusov in vanje vključili več različnih spremenljivk.

Title:Developing fair test design skills in fifth-grade students
Abstract:International assessments (TIMSS, PISA) have indicated that Slovenian students exhibit above-average performance in science. However, they display a markedly low inclination to engage in science learning. Integrating inquiry-based learning and experimental work actively involves students in the learning process, fostering an enhanced interest in science and enabling the development of problem-solving skills, both within and beyond the field of science. This includes the design of experiments. The curricula encompass content and objectives that introduce students to the concept of a fair test, emphasizing the deliberate variation of only one independent variable to infer dependence on that specific variable. In this master’s thesis, we conducted a pedagogical experiment to investigate how the design of experimental work influences the fair test design skills of fifth-grade students. The sample comprised 70 pupils from two primary schools. Our findings revealed that the experimental group exhibited significantly superior fair test planning skills in the post-test compared to the control group. On average, they devised more experiments accurately and incorporated a greater variety of variables. Moreover, they demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in their existing knowledge. No statistically significant differences were observed between the performance of girls and boys in planning fair tests. The results of the study affirm the vital role of conducting experimental work in enhancing the planning and comprehension of fair tests. This highlights the significance of practical application in addition to theoretical reasoning and explanation.
