Title:Cross-Curricular integration of philosophy for children in selected third triade primary school curriculums
Abstract:In primary school subject syllabuses, teachers teach their subject in an isolated environment, a result of traditional reasoning, which views the teacher as an independent authority capable of handling the subject matter and managing classroom activities. In this master's thesis, we found that teachers devote very few hours to cross-curricular integration, despite indicating frequent use of cross-curricular integration in their self-evaluations. The current state does not meet the requirements of an integrative curriculum, which presupposes a continuous interplay of disciplines to enhance the quality of subjects. Cross-curricular cooperation between teachers is also an important component for improving the learning experience of cross-curricular integration. Collaboration between teachers has been shown to follow the necessary steps for delivering quality lessons; however, teachers apply the recommended steps – pre-setting general objectives, methods, literature review, and evaluation – with less consistency when it comes to independent implementation. Self-evaluations show that teachers are introducing skills and elements of philosophy for children to a significant degree in their subjects. They are most consistent in introducing collaborative thinking and least consistent in introducing creative thinking into their lesson preparations. We also found that social studies and humanities teachers use caring thinking in their lessons more often compared to natural science teachers. The problem we identified stems from the absence of a uniform definition of critical thinking. While teachers often introduce critical thinking into the classroom, their methods of implementation do not meet the standards of teaching critical thinking envisioned by the philosophy for children subject. Philosophy for children is prominently featured in the general objectives of curricular subjects; at the same time, it serves as the foundation for acquiring the general objectives in compulsory subjects in the third triad. The philosophy for children subject should therefore at least be mentioned in the syllabuses of compulsory subjects under the “cross-curricular links” category.
