Njeni začetki segajo vse do starega veka in celo dlje.

Title:Intelligence activities during the reign of Elizabeth I.
Abstract:Espionage is considered the second oldest profession in the world. Its origins date back to ancient times and even further. It's believed that the emergence of modern intelligence services began with intelligence activities during the reign of Elizabeth I. Sir Francis Walsingham was the driving force behind her intelligence service, which operated from 1573 to 1590. This, for the time, unofficial intelligence service has shaped the way intelligence services operate to this day. Walsingham had a group of associates who acted as analysts as well as intelligence officers tasked with running agents throughout Europe and also within England. He also had a group of infiltrators who covertly penetrated enemy circles, a group of cryptography experts who deciphered the enemy's letters, and a large number of secret agents in various positions throughout Europe. Walsingham's intelligence service also functioned as a security service. Queen Elizabeth I. was threatened not only by external enemies, but also by enemies within her kingdom. A large intelligence network that extended into the Ottoman Empire was able to detect and thwart the activities of various opponents of queen Elizabeth I, including Mary Queen of Scots, King Philip II of Spain, and Pope Pius V. The use of the HUMINT method, the oldest form of intelligence gathering, was key to uncovering the enemy's intentions and plans (there were many plots and threats). The timely detection of the purpose of the English College, the detection of the Throgmorton and Babington plots, and the military threat from Spain could be ensured through the use of the HUMINT method. Without Walsigham's intelligence service, Queen Elizabeth I's reign would have ended with her deposition or even death.
