Title:Non-Pharmacological interventions on pain management in patients after hip arthroplasty
Abstract:Introduction: Hip arthroplasty is one of the most common surgical procedures in surgery. After surgery, the key barrier to a normal return to life is acute postoperative pain, which can be relieved in several ways. The aim of this thesis is to investigate and present non-pharmacological interventions for pain management in patients after hip arthroplasty. Methods: The search of the scientific literature was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library and ScienceDirect databases. We identified 212 studies and included 10 studies that were thematically relevant in the final review. Results: We found that the most effective non-pharmacological interventions used in all studies to reduce postoperative pain after hip arthroplasty surgery were TENS, acupuncture and education or preoperative exercises, walking, meditation, postoperative standard exercises and functional exercises. Discussion and Conclusion: Non-pharmacological interventions after total hip arthroplasty vary and affect patients differently. Pain is subjective, so we need to take the patient into account when they complain of pain. We have found that various non-pharmacological interventions can reduce post-operative pain, while positively influencing other physiological and psychological responses of the patient, thus improving the patient's lifestyle.
