Title:The mediating role of sleep quality and the moderating role of chronotype in the relation between social media use and mental health
Abstract:Social media use (SMU) is a normative, daily, and increasingly popular activity among young adults and adolescents. Despite its prevalence, SMU can have negative consequences. Research shows that SMU is negatively associated with sleep quality, chronotype and mental health. In our research, we wanted to examine the complex relationships between these variables among Slovenian students. The underlying research question was whether sleep quality mediates the relationship between SMU and mental health. In addition, we wanted to check if chronotype moderates the relationship between SMU and sleep quality and the relationship between sleep quality and mental health. We conducted a short longitudinal study. The sample consisted of 161 participants, of which 80,1% were female and 16,1% were male. The mean age was 22,4 (SD = 2,5). We used a Social Network Sites Usage Questionnaire for measuring featured SMU and affective experience with SMU. Students’ mental health was measured with the short form of Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). Sleep-related variables were checked with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Morningness Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). SMU, sleep quality, and mental health were measured three times over three weeks. Our results show that only affective experience scale in the first week significantly negatively predicts sleep quality in the second week. Affective experience scale also negatively predicts mental health in the third week. Sleep quality partially mediated the relationships between affective experience scale and students’ mental health. Chronotype was not a significant moderator of these relationships.
