Title:Trends and perspectives of tourism : motives and practices of tourists in changed circumstances
Abstract:The contribution is based on the premise that we urgently need to study tourism and related tourism practices in a broader socio-cultural context. Grounded in this perspective, it considers tourist motives not as pre-social or pre-cultural, i.e. essentialist and universalist, but rather as co-shaped by the sociocultural context. Moving beyond the established tradition of psychological research of motivation and following the paradigm of non-essentialism, it goes beyond the individualisation of motives, historicises the motives and thus endorses sociohistorical specific and collectively typical motivations. In the second part, the contribution lists some recent tourism trends that indicate the future directions of tourism development and the growing popularisation, which is justified in the changed socio-cultural circumstances and contemporary motivations. In the end, the authors expose key paradoxes and dilemmas that open up when identifying and addressing relevant segments of guests and designing the tourist experiences as such. They conclude with a call for awareness of the transformative role of tourism in societies and the promotion of social and environmental justice in the sector that in turn ultimately expands beyond the tourism context itself and spills over into society as such.
