Abstract:Diplomsko delo razgrinja globoko zakoreninjene vzgibe, ki so vodili države k pridobitvi jedrskega orožja (JO), proučuje pa tudi, kako so se ti motivi spreminjali skozi čas. Ta vpogled v globalno dinamiko dopolnjuje naše razumevanje kompleksnosti teh motivacij.

Title:The motives for posession of nuclear weapons
Abstract:The research unravels deeply rooted motives that have led nations to acquire nuclear weapons, examining how these motives have evolved over time. It meticulously analyzes various stages of nuclear weapon development, from early attempts to a fully developed nuclear arsenal. It highlights the role of political, military, and economic circumstances in shaping these motivations and how these circumstances have formed national strategies regarding nuclear weapons. Additionally, the research emphasizes the influence of the international environment on nations' decisions regarding nuclear weapon possession. It explores how geopolitical conditions, international conflicts, and security threats have impacted decision-making related to nuclear weapons. This insight into global dynamics complements our understanding of the complexity of these motivations. The research also touches on moral, ethical, and humanitarian issues related to nuclear weapons. It examines how these aspects have been considered by nuclear weapon holders and how these debates have unfolded within the international community. Our findings confirm four key hypotheses: firstly, nations use nuclear weapons to establish a balance of power; secondly, they use them to defend against invasion; thirdly, they wish to maintain secrecy about their weapons; and fourthly, they are sceptical about the real success of nuclear weapon limitation treaties. These hypotheses together reveal a complex picture of motivations for possessing nuclear weapons, encompassing strategic, political, economic, and ethical factors. The analysis of these aspects adds depth to the understanding of motivations for possessing nuclear weapons and their impact on global security. The research emphasizes the need for further exploration and understanding of these key issues that shape the nuclear policy and strategy of nations worldwide.
