Title:Analysis of mechanical and chemical resistance of various recycled and bio-based thermoplastics as a basis for the selection of BO Daily product material
Abstract:Within the scope of the thesis, we focused on selecting an appropriate polymeric material for the manufacture of a container for daily collection of organic waste - Bokashi Organko Daily. We studied the impacts of various mechanical and chemical properties of these materials on the functionality and appearance of the final product. We chose from four different thermoplastics, which were either bio-based or recycled, or contained a different amount of recycled material. The selected materials differed in the percentage of recycled content and the method of obtaining the recycled material. One material was bio-based. Based on all the tests conducted, we concluded that the mechanical properties varied most significantly in the case of polyamide (PA) material. From the tests, it proved to be the most brittle – the final product made of PA cracked when it was dropped from a height, which could pose a danger to the user. The material is also hygroscopic, absorbing moisture and changing dimensions. Therefore, we excluded it from the list of potential materials. The most suitable material, after conducting all tests, was found to be polypropylene (PP) ECO Meplen, which we selected as the material for manufacturing the container for collecting organic waste, Bokashi Organko Daily.
