Kvalitativna analiza vsebine je razkrila šest ponavljajočih se tem: »Čustveni boji neprostovoljne prilagoditve«, »Zadovoljujoči užitki počitnic doma«, »Doživljanje ponosa ob izražanju (in zagovarjanju) okoljske ozaveščenosti«, »Sproščujoča praksa potovanja z vlakom (številna udobja potovanja z vlakom)«, »Doživljanje frustracij zaradi omejenih načinov mobilnosti (osramočeni letalski potnik)« in »Uravnavanje in premagovanje sramu«.

Title:Media constructions of travel-related emotions: : the cases of flight shame and train brag
Abstract:The thesis focuses on two distinctive social media phenomena which are opposite in terms of emotion display but highly similar in purpose. Greta Thunberg’s movement was the main step forward to experience moral anguish over air travel to stop or reduce the frequency of flying while train bragging arose as a new, supportive phenomenon. The research is grounded in practice theory and builds on the idea of emotions as practice. The aim was to investigate how negative emotions related to flight shame and positive emotions related to the train brag phenomenon are portrayed on social media and discuss the implications of the displayed travel-related emotions on behavioural change. A total of 199 Instagram posts were sampled systematically for the analysis, with the corresponding hashtags being the main criteria. We analysed media constructions of emotions related to travel choices on Instagram using qualitative and quantitative content analysis, which provided us with an insight into how emotions are being verbally discussed and visually portrayed online. Qualitative content analysis revealed six recurring themes on how emotions are discussed: “The emotional struggles of involuntary adaptation”, “The gratifying pleasures of staycation”, “Experiencing pride in declaring (and advocating for) environmental awareness”, “Relaxing practice of train travelling (the many comforts of train travel)”, “Experiencing frustration over limited means of mobility (Shameful plane traveller)” and “Regulating and overcoming shame”. The quantitative content analysis of dominant visual conventions for portraying emotions reveals that flight shame and train brag phenomena are portrayed similarly or uniformly with subtle differences. We conclude this can be attributed to the distinctive and dominant aesthetic style of representation on Instagram, called Instagrammism.
