Abstract:Volkci lijakarji so žuželke, katerih ličinke v pesku gradijo pasti v obliki lijaka za lov plena.

Title:Analysis of geometry of pitfall traps in sand
Abstract:Pit-building antlions are insects whose larvae catch prey by constructing pitfall traps in the sand. The slope of the trap and sand avalanches impede the escape of the prey, therefore, the shape of trap is crucial for hunting success. Different species of pit-building antlions can build differently shaped traps. In the study by Devetak et al. (2020), we analysed the connection between the trap geometry and the properties of the sand substrate. We scanned the traps in 3D with a laser scanner and created 3D models of the traps, which we used to describe the shape with angle measurements and to analyse the trap variability using the geometric morphometry methods. We found that a substrate with smaller granulation or a larger proportion of fine sand enables the construction of more complex traps with steeper walls, as it has a higher maximum angle of stability. The shape of the trap therefore depends on the structure of the substrate and in a heterogeneous habitat enables the coexistence of different antlion species with different substrate preferences.
