Title:Environmental awareness of anaesthesia medical workers
Abstract:Introduction: Healthcare has an impact on the environment, with operating theatres alone generating 30-70 % of all packaging waste. Employees may also separate packaging inappropriately, and we should focus on environmental sustainability initiatives. The research aimed to determine the perception of healthcare staff on environmental sustainability in anaesthesiology. Methods: The research was based on quantitative methodology. Data were collected using a survey questionnaire adapted from Tordjman, et al. (2022). All anaesthesia healthcare workers were invited to participate in the research, the sample included 51 healthcare workers in the field of anaesthesiology in one clinical institution. The data obtained were analysed using Microsoft Office Excel and descriptive statistics. Results: 21 registered nurses, 6 master's nurses, 6 anaesthesiology specialists registrar, and 18 anaesthesiology specialists participated in the survey. The survey showed that employees separate waste at home and work and are aware of their impact on the environment through proper waste management. Discussion and conclusion: Anaesthesia healthcare workers play a major role in environmental sustainability, as their behaviour reduces environmental pollution, and by using medicines and materials wisely they can reduce costs for healthcare institutions while taking care of the environment. It is recommended that they educate themselves and update their knowledge through training at regional, national, and global levels, as this is the only way to ensure that the environment is well looked after for our posterity.
