Abstract:V magistrskem delu obravnavamo prevajalska orodja, ki jih uporabljajo prevajalci v Evropskem parlamentu, jih raziskujemo in ugotavljamo, kako vplivajo na hitrost, ekonomičnost ter kakovost prevajalskega dela. V Evropskem parlamentu, kjer razprave in zakonodajni postopki potekajo v 24-tih uradnih jezikih Evropske unije, so jezikovne tehnologije nepogrešljive pri zagotavljanju večjezične komunikacije. Prevajalci v Parlamentu uporabljajo širok nabor tehnološko naprednih prevajalskih orodij, s katerimi prispevajo k zagotavljanju učinkovitega in natančnega sporazumevanja znotraj ter zunaj parlamentarnega okolja.

Title:The impact of translation tools on the work of translators in the European Parliament
Abstract:The master's thesis examines the translation tools employed by translators in the European Parliament, analysing their impact on the speed, cost-effectiveness, and quality of translation work. One of the key tools is machine translation service eTranslation, which is continuously enhanced and updated with large datasets derived from EU legislative texts and parliamentary documents. In the European Parliament, where debates and legislative procedures take place in the 24 official languages of the European Union, language technologies are essential for facilitating multilingual communication. Translators in the European Parliament utilize a wide range of technologically advanced translation tools to ensure effective and accurate communication both within and outside the Parliament. Despite the quality of machine translation, the key role of the translator is to post-edit the machine-translated text. This includes terminological and stylistic adjustments, areas where machine translation systems often encounter difficulties. The translation workflow within the Parliament also incorporates computer-assisted translation tools to enhance efficiency and consistency of translation. We were interested in how these tools impact translators’ work, as the Parliament requires a blend of information literacy, mental flexibility, linguistic diversity, translation speed, and awareness of current events. In the theoretical part, we have defined the role of a translator in the European Parliament as an intercultural mediator and emphasized the functionalist approach, which positions the translator as a key expert in their specific field and target audience. We presented the translation tools, such as terminology tools, machine translation and translation memory, used in the translation process in the European Parliament, highlighting their contribution to efficiency of translation work and text coherence. Given the swift technological advancements in the field of translation and the array of language technologies accessible to translators in the European Parliament, we aimed to delineate the future role of translators, considering how artificial intelligence has recently altered the social and economic standing of the translators. The empirical part of the master’s thesis comprises a survey questionnaire aimed at the Slovene translation unit in the European Parliament. The survey delved into various aspects, including whether translators engage in tasks beyond translating legislative and non-legislative texts, their language combinations and competencies, the tools they utilize and their impact on their work, other language technologies employed in their translation work, and their outlook on the profession’s future evolution within the European Parliament. As part of the empirical research, we also conducted an interview with Valter Mavrič, Director-General of the Directorate-General for Translation in the European Parliament.
