Title:Ansambel bratov Avsenik: from local musicians to Berlin philharmonic
Abstract:This master's thesis is aimed at those seeking an in-depth exploration of the work and evolution of the folk music ensemble “Ansambel bratov Avsenik”. The study chronologically traces their years of activity, summarizing insights from various authors who have previously researched the ensemble. The thesis features interviews with key figures, namely with Slavko Avsenik Jr., the firstborn son involved in music composition and production, and his son Blaž, who represents the new generation of the ensemble. An interview with Sašo Avsenik provides insight on the current state of the ensemble's music and the challenges they face in maintaining its global presence. Smiljan Greif offers a perspective on his professional collaboration with Slavko, as well as personal reflections on their relationship. Additionally, Ferdo Kikl, a friend of Slavko, provides testimony on the creative process and Slavko's character as a friend. The thesis concludes with an analysis of three pieces, selected systematically to illustrate the ensemble's early stages as a trio, quintet, and quintet with a trio. This master's thesis employs a structured approach based on historical methodology, which involves studying the ensemble's activities through archival sources. Interviews offer a better understanding of the ensemble's interactions and collaborations from firsthand perspectives. Furthermore, the analysis of musical compositions using audio recordings and sheet music enhances the understanding of the ensemble's artistic contributions.
