Title:Prisoners and childhood traumas
Abstract:Numerous studies indicate that individuals who have been exposed to at least one trauma in childhood are more likely to develop various problems in adulthood, including mental health issues, substance abuse, interpersonal relationship problems, and criminal behaviour. The aim of the thesis was to present the connections between experienced childhood traumas and later deviance of individuals, while also examining whether the characteristics of trauma influence the form of criminal acts among prisoners, Two research questions: »Do childhood traumas influence the subsequent criminality of individuals?« and »Do the characteristics of trauma influence the specificity of criminal acts among convicts?« were posed. The thesis was based on the analysis of secondary sources, encompassing foreign and domestic scientific literature, through which we presented the results of our findings. After reviewing the literature, we divided it into three themes: trauma in relation to criminal behaviour and arrests, trauma in relation to antisocial characteristics, and trauma in relation to the mental health of prisoners. We found that individuals who experienced trauma in childhood are more prone to engage in delinquent behaviour in adulthood than those who were not exposed to such experiences. This includes various forms of criminal behaviour, which often correlate with similar traumatic experiences that individuals endured in childhood. Additionally, exposure to traumatic experiences in childhood often leads to the development of antisocial behaviours, such as aggressiveness and impulsivity, and the development of psychological disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder or mood disorders, which can further increase the risk of criminal behaviour. Consequently, prisoners often fall into a cycle of repeating actions they themselves experienced in childhood.
