Title:Effect of ultraviolet rays on the transformation of cannabinoids
Abstract:The purpose of the thesis is to determine the impact of ultraviolet ray exposure of industrial cannabis extract on the transformation of inactive cannabinoid forms into active forms, and on the mutual transformation of active forms (THC into CBN). Cannabinoids are, because of their medicinal properties, key components of cannabis, though their content has to be regulated due to legislative constraints. According to the results, the wavelength of ultraviolet rays had no significant impact on the transformation of cannabinoids. The extracts were subjected to a 15 Watt ultraviolet light for varying times from 0 to 65 minutes, and analysed using a liquid chromatography system, with tandem mass spectrometry. For the minimization of THC, times of 32 and 65 minutes are optimal, as THC content of the extract drops from the starting value of 1,97 % to 0,81 % and 0,76 %, respectively. Considering that we aim to maintain a high CBD content, a time of 32 minutes is proposed, as the content of CBD drops sharply after 65 minutes. The content of CBD remains approximately constant afte ran initial drop (from 52,20 % to 32,50 %), until an increase to 37,74 % at 40 minutes of exposure, and a subsequent drop at 65 minutes. CBN content increases because of the transformation from THC until the 32nd minute (from 0,050 % to 0,17 %). After 50 minutes of exposure, CBN content starts to drop. The data was statistically analysed, and it was determined, that the impact of ultraviolet ray exposure of cannabis extract on the transformation of cannabinoids is significant.
