Title:Upgrade possibility to an adaptive system for plant protection product application in apple orchards with the use of an Intel RealSense D435if camera
Abstract:Pesticides (often abbreviated as FFS) are substances used in agriculture to protect plants and crops from pests, diseases, and weeds. The use of pesticides and their potential negative effects on the environment are widely discussed today. However, adequate agricultural production is difficult to imagine without their use, so it is essential to focus on better management and the monitoring of their application. An experiment was conducted in an apple orchard, using an Intel RealSense camera. This camera is part of an upgraded adaptive system for applying pesticides, which operates based on electromagnetic valves on the sprayer. This system was designed and tested in the TRANSFARM 4.0 project at the Department of Biosystems Engineering at the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The goal of the thesis is to enhance this system with the Intel RealSense D435i camera, which will help estimate the potential savings in pesticide use in the orchard compared to the basic adaptive system. The aim is to determine if using this camera is cost-effective, as it is five times cheaper than the LiDAR system used in the basic adaptive system. The experiment was conducted over a 20-meter length and a 3-meter width ofthe orchard row. We took 19 images of the tree canopies with the camera positioned 2 meters from the canopy. The main finding was that the potential savings in pesticide use were around 10%. Thus, using the camera proved to be effective, representing a significant step forward in developing more precise pesticide application, which offers farmers greater savings both in pesticide costs and technology investments.
