Abstract:Avtomobilska industrija v globalnem gospodarstvu predstavlja eno izmed najpomembnejših industrij, saj združuje številne industrije, ki tvorijo globalno mrežo številnih podjetij, ki jih pod skupno streho združujejo OEM. Spremembe so trenutno znotraj avtomobilske industrije edina stalnica.

Title:Purchasing power parity in selected countries with growing motor vehicle production
Abstract:The automotive industry in the global economy represents one of the most important sectors, as it brings together various industries that form a global network of numerous companies, unified under the umbrella of OEMs. Currently, change is the only constant within the automotive industry. This refers both to the globalization process, which marked the automotive industry decades ago, and to trends such as electrification, the integration of artificial intelligence into the production process and the final product – the automobile, changes in consumer habits, and structural shifts in the automotive market. In recent times, we have observed a slow trend of stagnation in established countries that have shaped the fate of the automotive industry for several decades. Due to these changes, new countries, which played a driving role during the globalization process, are coming to the forefront. In international trade, new connections have been established that, at first glance, may seem unconventional and were difficult to imagine decades ago. Due to the numerous connections in international trade and the rise of the automotive market, our master’s thesis focused on whether purchasing power parity holds for China, India, Brazil, South Korea, and Turkey. Testing purchasing power parity has recently become very popular among many authors. We divided the process of verifying purchasing power parity into two parts: first, by presenting a line graph of the logarithm of the real exchange rate for each selected country, and in the second phase, we employed more formal methods for testing purchasing power parity. We decided to test purchasing power parity for the selected countries using stationarity and cointegration tests. For stationarity testing, we chose to use the augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test and the Kwiatkowski-Phillips-Schmidt-Shin (KPSS) test. For cointegration testing, we opted to use the Engle-Granger test. We selected USD and EUR as the base currencies. The analysis is based on monthly data from January 2000 to December 2022. The test results showed that purchasing power parity, when using the USD as the reference currency, is partially confirmed for South Korea, China, India and Turkey, and when using the EUR as the reference currency, purchasing power parity is partially confirmed for South Korea, India, and Turkey.
