Title:The Impact of a Deficit of Knowledge of the Slovenian Language on Foreign Language Acquisition at the Transition from Primary to Secondary School
Abstract:The mother tongue plays and important role in the process of foreign language acquisition. In the past, the use of mother tongue in foreign language teaching has varied, with some researchers advocating the use of mother tongue and others strictly opposing it. In this master’s thesis, we investigated the extent to which Slovene is used in foreign language teaching in Slovenian primary and secondary schools and what are the consequences of its use. The study involved 36 ninth-grade pupils in primary school, 69 first-year pupils in secondary school, as well as three primary school teachers and four secondary school teachers. The results of the study showed that Slovenian language proficiency is crucial in foreign language acquisition, as grammatical structures and rules are repetitive and, consequently, learning a foreign language is faster and easier. We have also found that while the level of foreign language proficiency among primary and secondary school pupils is rising, Slovenian language proficiency is declining, which is a very worrying fact. Teachers suggest increasing the amount of compulsory reading, as they believe this would improve mother tongue proficiency and, as a result, facilitate the acquisition of a foreign language.
