Abstract:Uvod: Migrena je pogosta nevrološka bolezen. Obstaja dvosmerna povezava med črevesjem in možgani preko črevesne mikrobiote.

Title:Probiotics and migraines
Abstract:Introduction: Migraine is a common neurological disease. There is a two-way connection between the gut and the brain via the gut microbiota. Intestinal microbiota can be manipulated by taking probiotics, with which we want to improve health in a planned way. The aim of the thesis was to investigate the impact of probiotic consumption in patients with migraine on the occurrence of migraines and pain. Methods: We performed a literature review obtained from the following databases: CINAHL Ultimate, Cochrane Library, PubMed, Science Direct and Sage Journals. The PRISMA diagram was used to present the process of the review and to classify the selected research according to the hierarchy of evidence. Content analysis was used to analyse and synthesize the data. Results: Research has shown that probiotics may be helpful in reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines. Probiotics from the lactobacilli and bifidobacteria genera proved to be the most beneficial. Discussion and conclusion: Probiotics have a positive effect on neurogenic diseases, as they reduce the effect of oxidative stress. Thus, they reduce the incidence and pain of migraines, so it would be reasonable to introduce probiotics as a supportive treatment for migraines.
