Title:Challenges of expanding family businesses on the international market
Abstract:We will focus on family businesses from the Republic of Serbia that are expanding their operations to the international market. Our interest lies in these family businesses, their family values, and their experiences in conducting business on the international stage. Based on their experiences, opinions, and attitudes, we will gain insight into how they develop their business. The aim is to uncover the family values nurtured by these family businesses to better understand their work methods, position in the international market, and the competitive advantages that set them apart. In the theoretical part, we will explain concepts such as family business and the market in which family businesses operate, in order to understand their basic characteristics and business specificities. We will then explore the process of internationalization of family businesses, the motives, advantages, and disadvantages of the internationalization process itself, as well as the challenges that family businesses may encounter. We will also define family values to highlight their importance and impact on business operations. We explored the operations of family businesses from Serbia in the international market using a structured open-ended interview. The empirical part of the study presents the responses gathered from interviews conducted with the owners and members of these family businesses. By combining their experiences, thoughts, and opinions, we concluded that they face numerous challenges when operating in the international market, such as payment collection, lack of adequate working capital, and language barriers. Existing stereotypes about family businesses operating in the international market merely because they are from Serbia can be challenging and, therefore, a strong motivator for proving themselves and persevering. The interviewed businesses provided advice for other family businesses considering international market ventures, focusing on persistence, consistency, and honesty. This research offers insights into the challenges faced by family businesses and provides guidelines for those who aspire to expand their operations internationally. The study can also serve as a basis for further research on business risks in the international market and potential methods to mitigate these risks and stabilize operations.
