Title:Monitoring the daily feed intake and chewing activity of horses with the rumiwatch device
Abstract:The aim of the thesis is to determine whether the RumiWatch device is reliable for recording feed intake and gnawing activity in horses, as it is originally designed for ruminants. Prior to the experiment, we weighed and measured the mares and designed a feeding protocol tailored to each mare's daily activity and body weight, and an ethogram to record the mares' activities during feeding. The experiment lasted 10 days and was carried out on four mares. The mares were fed hay for the whole experiment and on the fifth day of the experiment the concentrate was introduced. In this study, we used the horse-specific version of RumiWatch Converter 7.4.15, which includes a 'Horse Mode' option to transform the data to horses. Statistical processing was performed via SPSS, using the Kruskal-Wallis test to compare the feed intake and bites of the selected mares with each other. Comparisons between the groups fed hay and concentrate, and two hours before and after feeding, were performed using the Mann-Whitney U test. The results showed, that mares spent 9.08 h feeding, with low ingestive activity in the early morning (00.00-8.00) and around midday (12.00-14.00), and pronounced peaks in ingestion in the morning (8.00-10.00) and late afternoon (18.00- 20.00). An increased number of chews were observed when concentrate was added. The conclusions of the study point out the practical usefulness of the RumiWatch device, as it allows an accurate monitoring of horse feeding behaviours.
