Title:Determination of methylmercury in aquatic organisms from the gulf of Trieste
Abstract:The purpose of this master's thesis is to determine the concentrations of methylmercury in aquatic organisms from the Gulf of Trieste. The Idrija mercury mine, which has been in operation for five centuries, has significantly contaminated the surrounding area. Via the Idrijca River and later the Soča River, the effects of mining can also be felt in the Gulf of Trieste, where the concentration of mercury in the water is elevated. Using liquid-liquid extraction, we extracted organic mercury from samples of aquatic organisms from the Gulf of Trieste and determined their methylmercury concentrations using a direct mercury analyzer. This method was also validated. We compared methylmercury concentrations in organisms from the Gulf of Trieste with the average concentrations of this contaminant in aquatic organisms from other parts of the world. Elevated concentrations of methylmercury were observed in the majority of the analyzed aquatic organisms. Based on the methylmercury concentrations, we calculated the maximum recommended weekly intake of the aquatic organisms studied. Additionally, we compared the methylmercury concentrations in whole fish with those in fishfillets of the same fish species. We found that the concentrations in the fillets were higher than in the whole fish, which further increases human exposure to this toxic compound, as we most commonly consume fish fillets. Finally, we compared the concentrations of several fish species from the Gulf of Trieste with those from the Kvarner Gulf. When comparing MeHg concentrations in fish from the Tržaški zaliv (Gulf of Trieste) with those from the Kvarner Gulf, we did not find any significant differences in MeHg concentrations.
