Title:The incidence of missed nursing care during the COVID-19 pandemic
Abstract:Introduction: The incidence of missed nursing care is an important indicator of the quality of nursing care and its increase during the pandemic can impact patient safety and satisfaction with nursing care. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of nursing care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The literature review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. The search strategy included keywords to find relevant articles in databases PubMed, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library. Included were research papers and systematic reviews on the basis of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods published up to June 2023. Results: It was found that the incidence of missed nursing care during the COVID-19 epidemic stayed the same or slightly increased in comparison to pre-epidemic. Based on the content analysis we identified three second-tier themes: factors, leading to missed care, missed nursing care activities and, consequences of missed nursing care. The most frequently missed activities were mobilization 3 times daily or as ordered, turning the patient every 2 h, oral care, emotional support, and, patient education. Increased missed nursing care was associated with factors such as staffing shortages, stressful work environments, and, poor communication. Discussion and conclusion: The COVID-19 epidemic highlighted the issues within the healthcare system, especially in nursing care. Important tasks like mobilization, turning patients, emotional support and, patient education were too often neglected. Improvement in the work environment and communication is key to improving the quality of care.
