Abstract:Slovenija je gozdnata dežela, saj gozdovi poraščajo dobro polovico države, hkrati pa jo odlikuje nadvse pestra narava.

Title:The influence of climate change and forestry activities on the abudance of the Pigmy Owl Glaucidium passerinum in the Pohorje area : Master thesis
Abstract:Slovenia is a forested country, with forests covering well over half of the country, but it also has a very diverse nature. Forests are remarkable for their high biodiversity, with birds being one of the most visible groups of animals - we see them at every turn. In 2024, I carried out a survey of the presence of Europe's smallest owl, the Pigmy Owl (Glaucidium passerinum), in the Pohorje SPA. The species is listed in Appendix 1 of the Birds Directive and is identified as a qualifying species for the Pohorje SPA (SI5000006). In my study, I investigated the impact of climate change and forestry activities on the presence of the Pigmy Owl in the Pohorje forests. In addition, I compared my census data with data from 2015. At several locations, I played a recording of Pigmy Owl calls in the afternoon and recorded their response. I also measured the temperature at the time of the census and the presence of old trees. The average temperature during the breeding season in spring increased by 1.77° C compared to 2015. Old deciduous forests, which are suitable nesting habitat for Pigmy Owl, dominated about 50% of the census area. The number of Pigmy Owl did not change significantly compared to 2015. I found that warmer temperatures in 2024 did not have a significant impact on the presence of the species, while the forest is largely well-preserved and suitable habitat for the Pigmy Owl.
