Abstract:Analizirali smo modularno organizacijo in stopnjo integracije lobanje velikega hrčka, Cricetus cricetus, z vidika ontogenetskega razvoja.

Title:Ontogenetic Aspect of the Modular Organization of the Skull of the Common Hamster, Cricetus cricetus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Abstract:We analyzed the modular organization and degree of integration of the skull of the common hamster, Cricetus cricetus, from the perspective of ontogenetic development. The study was performed on the ventral side of 127 skulls using geometric morphometric methods, taking into account the effects of allometry and sexual dimorphism. Modularity was tested based on the Escoufier RV coefficient. The results showed that male hamsters had slightly larger skulls than females, with the first statistically significant differences in skull size between sexes occurring on day 120 of age. In general, skull size increased allometrically with age and skull shape changed in accordance with growth. Differences in skull shape between sexes appeared at 150 days of age and increased with age, which is why we analyzed specimens separately by sex from 150 days of age onward. The division of the skull into facial and cranial parts was confirmed both in juvenile and subadult as well as in adult specimens. With increasing age, the connection of the hypothetical modules decreases, meaning that the skull exhibited a lower degree of integration or a higher degree of modularity as the specimens aged. This is in line with expectations, as functional modules are still developing in juvenile and subadult specimens, while they are already fully formed in adults. In a separate analysis for sex, the modularity hypothesis was confirmed in both males and females from 2 to 4 years of age. Similar results were obtained in both the analysis of the whole and half of the skull. Modularity was also analyzed after the exclusion of the influence of allometry and confirmed in adult specimens. Allometry was a strong integration factor, as the RV coefficient was markedly lower after eliminating the influence of allometry and the division into two modules was more pronounced.
