Abstract:Uporaba službenih psov za identifikacijo oseb na podlagi vonja sega več stoletij nazaj, ko so ljudje začeli prepoznavati in izkoriščati izjemne sposobnosti pasjega voha za različne naloge.

Title:Use of service dogs for identification
Abstract:The use of service dogs for the identification of individuals based on scent dates back several centuries, when people first recognized and harnessed the exceptional olfactory abilities of dogs for various tasks. In the antics time, dogs already assisted in hunting and protection; however, their application in more specialized roles, such as individual identification, developed later. Each person has a unique scent, composed of complex combinations of vaporous compounds on the skin. This individual scent is so specific that it enables the identification of a person based solely on their smell, which is of significant importance in forensic science. Odorology, a scientific discipline that studies scents, conducts identification of individuals through scent using two approaches. One approach involves the use of instrumental technology, while the other employs specially trained dogs. The canine olfactory system is exceptionally sensitive, allowing for effective scent recognition. Scent sampling is a critical procedure in the use of service dogs for identifying individuals in criminal investigations. It involves the collection and preservation of scents emitted by the human body or objects found at a crime scene. Scents are sampled using sterile materials, such as specialized scent carriers, which are then stored in airtight containers to prevent contamination. These samples are later used for identification, where the dog compares the scent sample collected from the crime scene with the scents of suspects. The success of scent sampling depends on the precise and correct execution of the procedure, ensuring reliable results in subsequent investigations and aiding in linking individuals to criminal activities based on their specific scents. Identification procedures using service dogs vary between countries, reflecting differences in techniques for collecting scents from crime scenes, the number of comparison samples, trial repetitions, dog training, and other factors. Although such evidence is not yet recognized in Slovenia, it is already successfully used as circumstantial evidence in courts in other countries.
