Title:Ethical dilemmas in the Teaching of Students at the Secondary School of nursing Ljubljana in Practical Classes Under the Supervision of a Mentor
Abstract:Introduction: The purpose of this master's thesis was to examine how students at the Secondary Nursing School experience ethical dilemmas they encounter during practical classes in a clinical environment and the role of mentors in assisting students in addressing these challenges. Methods: The research was conducted using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The primary research tool was a survey questionnaire covering five key areas: relationships between mentors and students, the quality of educational practice, patient safety, mentor responsibility, and students' attitudes toward patients and mistakes. The study involved 71 students from the third and fourth years of the Secondary Nursing School Ljubljana, who shared their experiences and opinions about practical training. Results: The results show that the majority of students (69%) rated their relationship with mentors as good or excellent; however, 24% highlighted the need to improve communication and increase student involvement in the educational process. Regarding patient safety, students were generally satisfied with the mentor's supervision, but the average score of 3.94 indicated the need for greater consistency from mentors. The encouragement of empathy and communication skills by mentors was rated highly, with an average score of 4.25. Nevertheless, students emphasized the need for a more systematic approach to teaching ethics. Discussion: The study found that it is crucial to strengthen mentor training in ethical dilemmas, improve teaching methods in ethics and communication, and standardize the quality of practical training.
