Abstract:Uvod: Sladkorna bolezen tipa 2 je ena najpogostejših kroničnih bolezni. Metode: Izvedli smo sistematični pregled literature v podatkovnih bazah PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL Ultimate (EBSCOhost) in SAGE. Vključene so bile različne metode prekinitvenega posta.

Title:The impact of intermittent fasting on type 2 diabetes: mechanisms, effects and potential therapeutic applications
Abstract:Introduction: Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases. Nutritional interventions are essential for its management. Intermittent fasting has become recognized as a method for improving metabolic health. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the effects, mechanisms, and potential therapeutic applications of intermittent fasting in people with type 2 diabetes. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review using the databases PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL Ultimate (EBSCOhost), and SAGE. The PRISMA diagram were used to present the study selection process. The research results were presented in a table, and articles were critically evaluated according to JBI criteria. Synthesis was performed using a descriptive approach. Results: Sixteen studies were included in the final analysis: ten randomized clinical trials and six literature reviews. Various methods of intermittent fasting were included. Most of the involved studies reported weight loss with intermittent fasting. We found that intermittent fasting positively affects HbA1c levels, glycemic control, and insulin resistance; however, these results are comparable to those achieved with continuous caloric restriction. Discussion and conclusion: Intermittent fasting has a beneficial effect on weight loss and glycemic control and could be used as a dietary approach in the management of type 2 diabetes.
